Choosing the right moving date

November 23, 2018

When it comes to planning a moving day, a great deal will depend on the exact date that you choose. It’s all well and good looking for a top-tier removal company or packing away all of your belongings, but without a date to work from it will be difficult to make all of your arrangements far enough in advance.

For example, when registering for council tax in your new locale, you will usually need to make clear the date when you started living at your new property. This will allow your new local council to send you an accurate bill. Your energy, water, gas and broadband providers will also be grateful, as an exact date will allow them to send over the final bills for your old property without any trouble. Most importantly, know when to book a removal company could save you some serious difficulties with scheduling!

That being said, it can still be worth taking the time to choose a moving day that will work to suit your plans. While you will need to decide on your exact moving date as soon as possible, it will still be worth taking a few considerations into account. For example, the day of the week that you choose to move on could influence how cheap it will be to hire a removal company while choosing the right time of year in which to move could make it far easier to book an appointment.

Let’s take a look at exactly what you will need to consider when choosing a moving date!

Check your rental agreement

As exciting as it can be to move to a new home, there can still be a certain amount of annoying red tape to deal with. If you are currently living in a rental property, you will want to check your rental agreement to find out how much notice you need to provide your landlord with before moving out.

Granted, you may simply be looking for a new property to move to once your tenancy agreement ends, but the rule will still apply. If you do not give yourself enough time to find a new place, you may end up in a rolling contract, which could leave your landlord upset at not being able to find new tenants. If you want to avoid upsetting them further, you will also need to give yourself enough time to hire an end of tenancy cleaner in order to get the place spick and span before your move.

As long as you understand the terms of your rental agreement and leave the property as you found it, you should have no trouble in moving out and getting the entirety of your rental deposit back. Just be sure to let your landlord know exactly when you intend the leave!

Speak with the sellers

If you are buying your next home, you will have an entirely different kettle of fish to deal with. For starters, the current owners will need a new home to move to before they can let you set a date. As such, you should not expect a quick turnaround, though taking your time will have the advantage of providing more freedom to choose the best mortgage provider for your new home.

Keeping up communications with the current homeowner will be essential for this. You will also want to take this time to hire a surveyor for the property in question, as this will allow you to avoid any unexpected repair jobs once you finally move in. Depending on your chosen mortgage provider, you may even be forced to book a survey before your loan can be approved.

Nonetheless, you will want to secure a moving date with the current homeowner as quickly as possible. If there are too many undue delays, you may even want to start looking at alternative properties.

Communication will be doubly vital when it comes to trading keys. The last thing you want is to turn up with your removers only to find that you do not have access to your new home! Ideally,  you will be able to exchange the keys several days in advance, though if necessary you may need to do so on the day of your move. Just be sure to have written confirmation from the current owner so that you can hold them accountable if they fail to show up on time.

Choose the right moving day

After the slog of looking for a new property and arranging the necessary surveys, conveyancing and mortgage loans, actually choosing which day of the week to move house on may seem fairly trivial. The truth, however, is that picking the perfect day of the week for moving house can save you a great deal of stress, along with a surprising amount of money!

What is the best day to move house? The most popular days for hiring a removal company tend to be Friday and Monday, the reason being that it allows movers to take advantage of the weekend for either packing or unpacking their belongings. Unsurprisingly, weekend slots also tend to be fairly popular, as they allow movers to avoid having to take time off work.

Unfortunately, not only will the slots available for these days fill up quickly, but they can also be surprisingly expensive. Why not consider moving on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday? It may seem painful to take time off work, but you will be far more likely to be able to hire the remover of your choice, and you may even be able to save money by choosing a less popular slot.

Remover availability

At AnyVan, there is one lesson that we tend to stress in almost every other article: you should always give yourself PLENTY of time to book a remover! When it comes to the best local and national removal firms, schedules tend to fill up weeks or even months in advance, especially during the summer.

Realistically speaking, you should get in contact with your chosen remover as soon as you have a precise date for your big move. Ideally, this will be at least four weeks in advance, though if you are moving at short notice then you may need to have a second or third choice in mind.
