Moving day can mean long hours spent loading and unloading, packing and unpacking. Therefore, when you get to your new home the first thing you are going to want to do is have a sit-down and a rest. Your sofa is probably among the first things you will move into your new home and definitely one of the first things you’ll want to use once you get there.
Transporting your sofa is no mean feat, however. It will take some prep work, manoeuvring and plenty of heavy lifting. You’ll probably need to get some help involved but before the heavy work starts, why not have a quick read of some handy hints to make moving your sofa easier.
Before you begin to move your sofa, you should plan exactly how you are going to get it out. You don’t want to end up with your sofa wedged in a doorway before finding out that actually, it won’t fit around that corner.
Measure your sofa from all angles; width, height, length and any other way so that you know what you are dealing with. Next, measure your doorways, halls, and corners to ensure that your sofa will actually fit. Consider the shape of your sofa - if yours is L-shaped, you may need to carry it on its side, for example.
If you can remember how you got your sofa inside the first time, it’s probably a good idea to have it go back that way. For example, did it come in the front door or the back? It is possible to remove a window frame to get your sofa out easily but you will need to find someone to do this for you, which will take pre-arranging.
You are going to need to know what size removal van to transport your sofa to your new house as anything small simply won’t fit a sofa in. You should position the sofa with the back against the side of the van in order to save space and also to prevent your sofa from shifting around. Such a large item can cause damage to your other belongings if it tips or slides.
You may put other items on top of your sofa whilst in the removal van but be careful not to put anything with sharp edges which may damage the upholstery on top.
Also, be wary of resting anything on the back of the sofa during the move to prevent any damage to the wooden back.
