The AnyVan guide to moving house… hungover

February 16, 2022

Whether it's unavoidable big weekend plans, after-work drinks or a quiet evening at home turned into a wild night on the town, a hangover is sometimes entirely inevitable.

But, what if you have to move house the following day?

We should probably preface by saying this: where possible, we don't advise trying to move home hungover. However, if that's the hand you've been dealt, you've got to play it. The movers might be on the way, your keys could need dropping off at a specific time, or a few last-minute boxes may need packed. But don't fret; we're here to help!

Allow us to present: 'The AnyVan Guide to Moving House Hungover'...

Before You Move

Rehydrate

As with all hangovers, water will be your best friend. A pint of water before bed and another in the morning should set you off on the right foot. Keep a bottle near you throughout the day, or try a sports drink like a Lucozade to replace your missing sugars and salts quickly.

Replenish

The best time to eat is, ideally, before you go out. But we can't turn back time yet, meaning the next best time is right now. Once your move gets going, you won't have much time to stop to eat. So, before getting started, make sure you eat something. You can't beat something fatty!

Rinse

Sometimes, the world can seem a much better place after a 10-minute sit-down shower when hungover. Moving is hard work, but you don't want to start on the wrong foot and still smelling like last night. So, hop in that shower!

Relax

No jeans, no collared shirts! You’ll want free fitting, loose clothes like tracksuit bottoms, gym wear and jumpers you can get lost in. Comfort is king today, and you should be dressed appropriately for the strenuous day ahead.

So, now you're in a better state to face the day, what next?

It's Moving Time

The movers are here

Depending on the type of move you’ve organised, you may have been smart enough to arrange for your movers to do all the hard work. If you haven’t? Get those sleeves rolled up and get stuck in!

Keep hydrated

Keep taking on fluids. Fill up that reusable bottle and keep it to hand at all times. Sipping a little water fairly often will help to keep headaches at bay. Water is your best friend today!

Start loading the truck

If you haven't opted for a removal company, you'll need to start loading the vehicle with your boxes. Have a moving checklist ready, this can make your day a lot easier.

Final checks

Packed everything up? Carry out one last sweep of every room, ensuring nothing is left behind. Make sure you have a box containing all your essentials travelling in the car with you.

You've packed up the moving vehicle, what's next?

Hello, New House!

Food and water

By this time, your hangover is probably reaching the peak of its powers. If you’ve got a spare second, have something small to eat. If not, just have more water or a coffee to keep you going.

Furniture set up

We're not suggesting you unpack and build everything in one go, but by getting your bed built and made before anything else, you give yourself the option of going at your own pace.

Time to unpack

If you packed using a system, start with the essentials box first; this should contain all the things you’re most likely to need over the next few hours. If you’re feeling up to it, you can continue to unpack a few more boxes, but we know you’re hungover, and you don’t want to exert any more effort than necessary!

Put your feet up

You’ve done it, you’ve moved house hungover. It might not make it on the CV, but it's still an achievement to be proud of! All that’s left is to order some food, sit back and relax in the comfort of your new home whilst vowing not to move hungover again. As for the rest of the unpacking? That can wait until tomorrow.

So there you have it, the AnyVan guide to moving house hungover. Hopefully, this will be handy for you.
