With Autumn well and truly here, and winter just around the corner - it’s the season for cosy nights in, duvet days and wooly jumpers indoors. Your home becomes your haven in Autumn and Winter, so use this time to make some beautiful home-changes. If you’re going to be stuck inside because of the rain, wind or cold - then it’s better to be stuck somewhere cosy, comfy and homely, right?

Here are some great home DIY and upcycling ideas we love, to make your home the ultimate indoor retreat this season. You’ll never want to leave!

The “sad couch” dilemma...

You’re going to be spending a lot of time on the sofa in autumn and winter (hopefully getting cosy with someone special!) or maybe just cuddling up to your cat or dog. Either way, you want to be sitting on something nice and comfy! This handy YouTube tutorial gives you an idea of how to transform a ‘sad couch’ into a happy couch… The difference is amazing!

The “dark nights, dark rooms” dilemma…

We all know in autumn and winter that the nights draw in and the evenings get darker, quicker. Because of the lack of sunlight during these colder months, it’s easy for your home to start feeling a bit dark and dreary too. If you want to avoid that, and you want to breathe a little bit of light and life into your rooms, then repainting furniture in a lighter shade, can be an easy way to do this.

We’d recommend going for big pieces of furniture that take up a lot of room. For example, if you have a dining table and chairs in dark wood - it’ll be darkening the whole room as it’s such a central piece of furniture. Revamping it and upcycling it to be lighter in colour, can really help turn this around.

Chalk paint is a great place to start, it’s beginner-friendly but loved by pros and experts too. Here are some Pinterest-worthy projects for inspiration;

The “big boots, no storage” dilemma…

In winter it seems like the quantity of shoes we have to have doubles. In summer, a pair of flip-flops and a pair of trainers is fine…. But in Winter we need wellies, walking boots, winter boots, trainers, slippers…. The list goes on.

If you find yourself struggling for shoe storage, then hopefully this blog will give you some inspiration! Check out the tutorial for this bright, colourful shoe rack here.

The wow-factor upcycle

If you want to do something truly jaw-dropping this autumn, and really push the boat out with your upcycling and DIY’ing - then these ideas are going to be perfect for you. These ideas may take a little longer, but they’ll definitely be worth it in the end.

Soft furnishings: cushions and throws

One of the main parts of feeling comfy and cosy, is having loads of soft, cuddle-worthy cushions to sit with. Revamping your soft furnishings to suit the colours of the season is a great way to quickly update your indoor space.

We love the idea of DIY’ing some autumn inspired cushions and using old jumpers or blankets to create beautiful new designs. If you’re a seasoned DIY addict, then this 3D fabric pumpkin might be more of a project for you. These pumpkins will never go mouldy, and they certainly don’t need carving!

They look so adorable placed by a fireplace, or even placed at the bottom of your bed.
